As 2017 comes to a close, we wish to thank our outgoing board member, welcome our new board member and announce transitions within the executive committee.

We are pleased to announce that Tom Harbour will begin his term on the IAWF Board of Directors on January 1, 2018.

Tom is a recognized expert in wildland fire and aviation management policy and operations. His successful and notable tenure as National Director of US Forest Service Fire and Aviation Management program (National Fire Chief) included unmatched service length. Through both direct international relationships and interaction with USAID (United States Agency for International Development), he provided assistance to every region of the world. He effectively dealt with senior elected officials and governmental leaders at the local, state, and federal level. He also successfully dealt with career professionals both domestically and internationally. During his tenure, Tom brought additional professionalism and enhanced performance to the organization. The US Forest Service fire and aviation program was the preeminent federal wildland fire program. Since retiring from the US Forest Service, Tom started a small business HarbourFire (harbourfire.com).

Tom Zimmerman will finish his second term as IAWF President and Chairman of the Board on December 31, 2017.

Tom has been instrumental in moving the IAWF forward in accomplishing our mission and strategic goals. Under his leadership the IAWF hosted several successful conferences, improved our strategic plan, created our first annual report, improved relations with several US Agencies, updated our bylaws and much more. Tom will continue to stay active as an IAWF member, including acting as the IAWF’s liaison to the Association for Fire Ecology. Tom has built a great foundation for the IAWF to continue and we sincerely thank him for his service.

Kathy Clay will finish her second term as IAWF Secretary.

Kathy has been a board member since 2013 and has one additional year on the Board of Directors. Thank you for your service on the Executive Committee Kathy, we look forward to one more year of your service on the board.

Tom Zimmerman will pass the torch to Alen Slijepcevic as the new IAWF President.

Alen will begin his term as IAWF President and Chairman of the Board on January 1, 2018 and is looking forward to the challenge. Alen has been a board member since 2014 and served as the IAWF Vice President for the past 2 years. Alen is the Deputy Chief Officer Capability and Infrastructure for the Country Fire Authority in Australia. Alen will be the first non- USA president for the IAWF. Congratulations Alen!

Toddi Steelman, former Executive Director and Professor at the School of Environment and Sustainability, University of Saskatchewan, Canada was elected as the new IAWF Vice President.

Toddi has been a board member since 2016 and will be the first female Vice President for the IAWF. Congratulations Toddi!

Steve Miller, Chief of the Bureau of Land Resources, St Johns River Water Management District in Palatka, Florida was elected as the new IAWF Secretary and will begin his term on January 1, 2018.
