Murray Carter (board member since 2016) Executive Director, Rural Fire Division, Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) Murray Carter has dedicated much of his life to combatting bushfire risk in Western Australia. Starting out as a 17-year-old cadet with the then Forests Department, he spent 13 years with CALM conducting prescribed burns and fighting large scale bushfires in country WA. Mr. Carter then took on the role of CEO for Lord Howe Island, leading marine and land management, before returning to WA and working in policy positions with the State Government. He dedicated five years to the role of Fire Manager for the then Department of Parks and Wildlife, and more than three years as Director of the Office of Bush- fire Risk Management (OBRM) leading key reforms in rural fire management at the Department of Fire and Emergency Services. The current Chair of the Australasian Fire and Emergency Services Authorities Council (AFAC) Rural and Land Management Group, Mr. Carter is also a member of the National Forest Fire Management Group, is on the Board of Directors of the International Association of Wildland Fire (IAWF), and is the current (inaugural) Chair of the WA State Bushfire Advisory Council.
