The organizers of The ’88 Fires: Yellowstone and Beyond Conference invite the submission of abstracts for contributed papers and posters that address lessons learned, fire effects, large fire management, policy, research related to the fires, the use of fire as a management tool, fire safety, and other related issues.

All submissions should be original or be based on unpublished ideas pertaining to the following topics.

  • Fire behavior, weather and fuels, including crown fire modeling, long range fire behavior, weather forecasting, fuels, and fuels management.
  • Fire ecology, including wildlife, water, aquatic systems, landscape ecology and fire history.
  • Fire management and policy, including fire suppression, operations, safety, and planning.
  • Global trends: carbon, invasive species, climate change.
  • Cultural and social perceptions of fire and the human interaction.

The content of submissions may include any subject as it relates to wildland fire challenges, and should not be limited to the 1988 fires.

In addition, the organizers encourage individuals and groups to recommend Special Sessions, which would focus discussions and presentations around specific areas of interest. The content of a Special Session may include any subject as it relates to the wildland fire challenges.

Please know there is time within our conference to schedule workshops, field trips, or “staff rides” after the conference. Individuals interested in delivering a workshop, field trip, hosting a “staff ride” or attending a specific workshop or training session should contact our planning team. We will do our best to satisfy the needs of our registrants and those in the wildland fire field.

This conference will provide information of value to:

  • Managers
  • Practitioners
  • Fire Behavior Specialists
  • Fire Management Officers
  • Fire Safety Officers
  • Fire Researchers
  • Students of Fire
  • Fire Communicators
  • Land Managers and Planners
  • Media Representatives

The purpose of the conference is to remember the events of the Yellowstone area fires of 1988. This will be an opportunity to celebrate and recognize all those who came before us. Newer members within the wildland fire community will have the chance to meet some of the individuals who made history and contributed so much to our success in fire management and research. Additionally, the conference provides an important opportunity for the current generation of wildland fire scientists and managers to be able to showcase their talents and contributions as we look to the future of fire, drawing upon lessons learned as we face ongoing challenges and opportunities.

Abstracts should be submitted through THE ONLINE SYSTEM we have set up through the University of Montana. The system is online now and is ready to accept abstracts. The abstract submission system is not connected to the IAWF membership database. You will need to register as a new user at that site.

April 22, 2008 is the new deadline for: (1) oral paper abstract submission (2) poster abstract submission and (3) special sessions. The conference Program Committee will review all abstracts and determine which will be accepted as well as the schedule of presentations. Authors of accepted papers and/or posters will be notified by e-mail no later than May 30, 2008.

Posters should be available for display at any time during the conference, and an evening session may also be required. Poster presenters are asked to attend their posters during the poster session.

Abstract length should be limited to 2800 characters (includes all spaces) Contributed papers will be assigned to sessions according to specific categories, therefore, submitters are asked to select a topic category that is most closely associated with the proposed presentation. An online form for submission of abstracts can be accessed through the link below.

Authors of accepted oral and poster papers are encouraged to prepare an extended abstract for inclusion in the conference proceedings. The deadline for the submission of manuscripts is August 31, 2008, however sooner is better. Late submissions will not be accepted.
