Optional Loop Fire Staff Ride (Field Trip)
Friday, April 28, 2006
On November 1, 1966, the El Cariso Hotshots were trapped by flames as they worked on a steep hillside in Pacoima Canyon on the Angeles National Forest 25 miles northwest of Pasadena, California. Ten members of the crew perished on the Loop Fire that day. Another two members succumbed from burn injuries in the following days. Using the Staff Ride process, you will have the opportunity to see the site, walk the ground, and discuss the events that happened on that fateful November day in 1966.

Lessons learned from the Loop Fire resulted in development of the Checklist for Downhill Line Construction, improved firefighting equipment, better fire behavior training, and the implementation of new firefighter safety protocols. This Staff Ride will allow you to reflect on the events, the changes that have occurred, and their relevance in your world of wildland firefighting.

Some moderate hiking will be involved. We will provide a box lunch, a beverage, handouts, and transportation via deluxe motor coach.

Who should attend:
Firefighters
Prescribed Burners
Land Managers
Fire Chiefs
Agency Administrators
Safety Officers
Fire Researchers
Fire Aviation Specialists
Public Officials

Co-sponsors:
Los Angeles County Fire Dept.
