Dude Fire Staff Ride (Field Trip) - May 1, 2009

At approximately 1230 on June 25, 1990, a dry lightning storm triggered a fire beneath the Mogollon Rim about 10 miles northeast of Payson, Arizona. This area is located on the Payson Ranger District of the Tonto National Forest. Conditions were such (high temperatures, low relative humidity, large accumulation of fuels, and several years of below normal precipitation) that the fire burned quickly, and within a matter of hours the Dude Fire had become a raging inferno. Before the fire was declared controlled 10 days later, over 24,000 acres had burned in 2 national forests, 63 homes were destroyed, and six firefighters were killed.

This tragic event inspired Paul Gleason to propose the LCES system L.C.E.S. (Lookouts, Communication, Escape Routes, Safety Zones), now a minimum safety standard for wildland firefighting. Other lessons learned from this incident that continue to influence fire suppression around the world today include knowledge about plume-dominated fire behavior, improved protocols for incident command transfer, and implementation of refresher training for fire shelter use.

Please join us during the 'Dude Fire Staff Ride' to walk in the footsteps of those before us and learn valuable lessons learned from that fateful event. Staff Rides are a proven 'experiential' leadership tool that gives you, the participant the opportunity to learn these valuable lessons from a experienced cadre and subject matter experts that were at the Dude Fire on June 26, 1990.

The Dude Fire Staff Ride is scheduled for Friday, May 1. Participants will leave the hotel promptly at 0630 via the arranged transportation and return to the hotel, no later than 2000. Participants will be provided a lunch and water and drinks will be also be provided. Each participant will be responsible to come fully prepared including the following provisions: Mandatory hard hat, small day pack, snacks and hydration supplements as needed, and sunscreen. Participants are urged to wear long pants, long sleeve shirt and comfortable supportive shoe wear with good hiking sole and good socks. The Staff Ride is considered moderate but may be arduous for some due to the elevation (6000') and heat stress index (85-90, low humidity). It is highly recommended that those expecting to walk the entire course are in good physical shape and prepared to hike. There will be accommodations for those wishing to participate but unable to hike the course. A mandatory orientation and safety briefing will be provided to participants on Thursday afternoon (April 30, 2009).
