Extracurricular Activities - Raleigh

In additional to the educational programs we have several exciting extracurricular activities planned for the week.

  • Monday evening after the workshops we will have a no host social followed by a facilitated discussion about the implementation of the cohesive strategy. It will be opportune to hear how regions plan to address these challenges and opportunities and to share how you and your organization or agency can play a role in finding solutions to our nation’s wildfire problems. Click here for more information.
  • Monday Evening we will conduct a Quiz Bowl. The goal is to provide a spirited competition between students from different schools and allowing both the participants and the audience to gain a better knowledge of Wildland Fire Science’s finer points.
  • Each morning before the conference, Tuesday - Thursday, we will provide a group led physical activity opportunity.
  • On Tuesday evening we will have a social reception open to everyone at the conference. This will be a time to visit the exhibitors and network with fellow conference participants. There will be a no-host bar and hors d' ouerves will be provided.
  • Our Banquet is scheduled for Wednesday Evening and will include dinner, dancing, awards and entertainment. Don't forget to sign up for this "not to be missed" event when you register.
  • Check back often as we will be adding other activites......

*** Fire Art Exhibit and Competition ***

Expressions of the Beauty and Danger of Fire
An Art Exhibit and Competition concurrent with the IAWF 4th Fire Behavior and Fuels Conference
Raleigh North Carolina

Purpose:  Exhibit artwork with a fire theme

The International Association of Wildland Fire is inviting all artists to display their works in a FIRE ART EXHIBIT that will be held at the 4th Fire Behavior and Fuels Conference in Raleigh, North Carolina. We encourage people to enter any form of art including textile, painting, wearable, photography, ceramics, collage, poetry, sculpture, carving etc.

  • Artists should include a short description of the art – title, what inspired it, how it was done and, for those of us with less imagination, what it is.
  • Awards will be given in several categories – best: in show, photography, oil, water color, acrylic, textile, ceramic, written, and people’s choice.
  • You may donate your work to a silent auction to raise funds for support of the Wildland Firefighter Foundation, National Fallen Firefighter Foundation and the International Fire Relief Mission.
  • Judging will be by local artists independent of IAWF.
  • Awards will be announced at the banquet Wednesday, February 20, for all categories after closing of people’s choice voting.
  • The Silent Auction will begin Tuesday morning and end Wednesday Evening after the banquet.

  • People are responsible for getting their art to and from the conference; however we will provide assistance with the shipping details if needed. There is a shipping depot in the hotel adjacent to the convention center.
  • To ensure we have enough space please complete the following entry form and email to execdir@iawfonline.org no later than January 30th.
  • Space for hanging or setting will be assigned when you register on Monday evening or Tuesday morning. Artists will need to indicate whether they would like to donate their art for silent auction at that time. Artists will be asked if they would like to set a minimum bid for their art. The art will be displayed from Monday evening through Thursday afternoon; all work must be removed by Thursday at 5 pm, but can be removed as early as Thursday morning (after the banquet).
  • People’s choice voting will be by a ticket in each registration packet.
  • If you have a piece of art that you would like to donate to the silent auction but not include in the competition please just let us know.
